vpContact Module for PostNuke

If your mail transport agent (MTA) settings require a valid From address, or if your running some SPAM software that marks email headers without valid From addresses as spam, and you use the vpContact module on your PostNuke sites, then you will want to change your pnuserapi.php file. Line number 237 looks like this:
$mailheaders = "From: $uname <> \n";
Change it so it looks like this:
$mailheaders = "From: $uname <$uemail> \n";

Yofitech, LLC is happy to report the release of "EagleNet", a PostNuke Theme available to the F/OS community under the GNU GPL. This theme was developed while working with the Bethlehem Central School District over the summer. The theme can be previewed by selecting EagleNet from the Theme Previews drop down menu on the Yofitech, LLC home page.

Solutions: New Yofitech AT-Lite Theme available for Download

There is a new PostNuke theme available for download under the Yofitech folder on the "Downloads" Page. The theme is called "bliss" and it was developed with AT-Lite. Bliss is available in both tar.gz and zip formats. The default settings has left and right blocks on for all pages. You can change this in theme.cfg if you prefer a different setup. Bliss and all other Yofitech PostNuke themes are licensed under the GNU GPL.
Note: You can see "bliss" by selecting it on the Theme Previews drop down menu located on the Yofitech homepage.

Solutions: Update to Yofitech's pnClean Theme

If you downloaded the Yofitech pnClean theme prior to August 12, 2003 it includes a bug with the full article view. When you display an article in full view, the paragraph spacing is missing. The issue has been resolved and the zip and tar.gz files have been updated with the fix. You can download the updated pnClean packages from our Downloads page, they are located under the Yofitech folder.
Note: A special thanks to g1gsw for bringing this bug to my attention!

Solutions: Secure Remote Automated Backups using Free Software

In today's business environment, we often hear catch phrases like business continuity. All this means is disaster preparedness, or the ability to continue business after a major crisis like a fire or flood.
We run backups every night with a tool called Cron. After our backups run, we move a copy of our backups to an offsite location because we want to have our data physically somewhere else, just in case something unexpected happens to our place of business.
The further away the offsite location is from our place of business the better. If disaster strikes, the offsite location will less likely be affected if it is 3000 miles away.

SSH is a great tool for both system administrators and users alike. SSH is an acronym for Secure SHell. The Secure means it is encrypted, but the level of encryption depends on which version of SSH you are running. This tutorial will cover both RSA and DSA key generation, so both SSH1 and SSH2 clients will be able to read and exchange keys with each other.
One nice feature of SSH is the ability for users to use Public Key Authentication. This type of configuration allows users to invoke SSH without being prompted for a password. An instance where this would be necessary is if the user has a Cron job that uses SSH to send a file to a remote host each night. Cron is a scheduler that runs commands at a particular time but more on Cron another time.

Yofitech has released a new PostNuke theme based on GeekLog's clean layout. The theme can be downloaded in either a zip or tar.gz file format. The files are available on the Download page under the folder called Yofitech.
The theme can be previewed by selecting clean from the drop down menu under the Theme Previews block located on the right hand side of the homepage.

GeekLog is a content management system similar to PostNuke. It is written in php and uses a MySQL DBMS. I recently downloaded GeekLog to take a look at the source code. It is a nice system with some great functions and tight themes. The installation procedure needs some tweaking but I managed to get it up and running after experiencing a couple of small issues. After testing it out, I decided to try my hand at porting a GeekLog layout to a PostNuke theme. I went with the gameserver layout, one of my favorite GeekLog layouts. The finished product is now available for download under the Yofitech folder on our Downloads page.

A modified version of the ExtraLite Postnuke Theme has been added to the theme library. The modifications include Nuclei Block and Simple URL support. In order to view the theme, login and change your default theme from MTmodular to ExtraLite. This can be done from the Control Panel page that loads after you login.

Reports: Georgetown University Open Source Summit

I am not exactly sure how this went under the radar and was not detected earlier, but better late then never. Apparently there was a summit held in Washington DC back in the fall where various industry players met to discuss the role and future of Free and Open Source Software in our society. The opening presentation was by Red Hat's Chief Technology Officer, Michael Tiemann. There were four panels over the two day summit consisting of various information professionals from various organizations.

The Swedish Agency for Public Management, Statskontoret, has released a report that is, quite frankly, out of this world. I urge everyone to take the time to read this study on the feasibility of Free and Open Source Software, sometimes referred to by the acronym FOSS. The work for this study was carried out by a working group consisting of representatives from various public, private and educational institutions in Sweden.

Yofitech, LLC hacked the NS-Your Account module for the PostNuke Content Management System. The hack or modification was packaged and added to the Yoftech Downloads module on Tuesday, April 15, 2003. I published an article on the PostNuke website the same day, alerting the community to the availability of Yofitech's NS-Your Account hack.

Our website, www.yofitech.com, has recently undergone a facelift. We implemented a new theme engine to render our dynamic database driven URLs' into static html pages. Search engines generally do not index dynamic URLs, consequently a large portion of our website was being missed by the major search engines. The Apache mod_rewrite module addresses this issue rewriting dynamic URLs according to various rule sets. These rules are placed inside a .htaccess file in the root web directory for the web server to execute upon request.

Everyone is talking about XML, but few know what it is or how to implement it. The Extensive Markup Language is a robust way of breaking apart your data into meaningful chunks. It has nothing to do with structure and everything to do with semantics. An XML document uses other tools to format it for display or transport purposes.
